ACC
announces the 2009 recipients for Excellence in Teaching
and Staff Person of the Year.
Justin Snyder is the 2009 Ronald W.
McCarter Excellence in Teaching recipient. Snyder joined
ACC as Horticulture Technology department head in 2003
after graduating from N.C. State University. Since then,
he has rejuvenated the ACC program resulting in record
enrollments. His students consistently win top awards
in garden and landscaping competitions at the N.C. State
Fair and the Alamance County Fair. Under Snyder, students
have excelled at the annual PLANET competition, where
they compete against hundreds of university and community
college students from across the nation. Snyder will
serve as ACC’s nominee for the state’s Excellence
in Teaching Award and the CCB Gold Star awards this
fall.
Laurent Changuion is Adjunct Instructor
of the Year. He has taught English at ACC since 1971.
The South Africa native earned graduated from Elon University
and, after earning his master’s degree, served
as English department head at ACC for 25 years. He retired
to teach part-time in 2001. Over the years, he has taught
journalism, reading, report writing, and literature.
Laurie Farrell is ACC’s Staff
Person of the Year. Employed at ACC since 1997, she
is accounting technician in administrative and fiscal
services. She earned degrees in accounting and business
administration from ACC. Her processing and managing
student financial aid requests is highly regarded by
colleagues.
Lynn Ferns is Continuing Education
Instructor of the Year. Employed in the Basic Skills
division as GED in the Community administrator, Lynn
has a B.S. in Education from New York University. She
has taught in almost every area of literacy instruction
at ACC for more than 25 years, working with students
in GED, Adult Basic Education, and Adult High School.
She also helped develop ACC’s national award-winning
GED in the Newspaper program.
Candidates for all awards were rated on initiative
and enthusiasm, expertise, professionalism, accomplishments,
and involvement and dedication to the College. .
